Boating BC’s mandate is to promote and protect the interests of the recreational boating industry in BC.
As such, members of the association are expected to abide by this Code of Ethics (the ‘Code’) in the conduct of their business and their dealings with others.
The Code is meant to foster a positive and productive association culture based on respect, cooperation and accountability. It protects the industry, the Association and its members, and allows for a response for unethical behaviour, which may be cause for disciplinary action by the Board of Directors.
Implicit in the Code is the requirement that Boating BC members comply fully with all municipal, provincial and federal laws.
In addition, members are placed in a position of trust to:
-
Behave in a transparent, honest and fair manner in all business dealings with members of the industry
and consumers.
-
Demonstrate professional courtesy and integrity in all dealings.
-
Ensure all advertising and representations are truthful and accurate.
-
Behave in an environmentally responsible manner.
-
Promote safe boating at every opportunity.
-
Provide expert advice that is accurate, truthful and not damaging or disparaging to other industry
members.
-
Always strive for excellence in quality of service to customers.
-
Address all warranty claims and consumer complaints promptly and in good faith.
-
Not incur any criminal or regulatory convictions that reflect negatively on the Association, industry or
other members in the community.
Process for complaints:
-
A complaint against a member of Boating BC may be filed by another member, consumer or anyone who does business with the member in question. Complaints can be directed to Boating BC’s Executive Director who will bring them forward to the Disciplinary Committee (the ‘Committee’) for review.
-
If the Committee believes there has been a violation of the Code, the Committee will put forward a recommended action to the Board of Directors (the ‘Board’) for a vote. The recommended action may include disciplinary action up to and including expulsion.
-
The Board maintains absolute discretion and can choose not to act in accordance with the Committee’s recommendation. If the Board believes there has been a violation of the Code and discipline or expulsion is necessary, the Executive Director shall provide ten (10) days’ notice of such discipline or expulsion to the member and shall provide reasons for the proposed discipline or expulsion. The Member may make written submissions to the Executive Director in response to the notice received within such ten (10) day period.
-
If no written submissions are received by the Executive Director, the Board may proceed to discipline or expel the member and to notify the member of the decision made by the Board. If written submissions are received from the member, the Board must consider such submissions in arriving at a final decision and shall notify the member concerning such final decision within a further thirty (30) days from the date of receipt of the submissions.
-
The support of a quorum vote by the Board is required to approve discipline or expulsion of a member.
-
If a member’s membership has been terminated, the member must re-apply for membership in accordance with Article II of Boating BC’s bylaws.
