Overview

The Waterfront Coordinator oversees waterfront activities at the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site and Imperial Landing public dock in the neighbourhood of Steveston. This position supports dock activities that create opportunities for heritage and recreational experiences and allow residents and visitors to enjoy these spaces. This position also helps to ensure safe and positive experiences at the docks for boaters and residents by supporting the enforcement of waterfront regulations and fees.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Overseeing the day-to-day operation of docks and serving as the point of contact for the City with dock users;
• Managing dock moorage including processing reservations, overseeing agreements, and collecting payments;
• Ensuring visiting boats are adhering to waterfront regulations;
• Serving as the Marine Facility Security Officer as defined by Transport Canada;
• Promoting docks and recruiting unique vessels for heritage programs;
• Supporting logistics of dock use for events and programs;
• Coordinating maintenance and upkeep of the docks;
• Liaising with dock user groups and organizations involved in activities related to Steveston’s waterfront; and Serving as a resource for dock activities across the City.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Demonstrates considerable knowledge of policy, procedures and regulations relative to marina operation and small boat operation, maintenance, servicing and storage;
• Able to deal professionally and effectively with the public, stakeholder groups and other employees;
• Able to read and write technical reports related to dock management;
• Able to communicate professionally in writing and verbally;
• Has a strong understanding of Microsoft Office applications;
• Able to handle sums of money and maintain adequate records;
• Able to create, execute and maintain maintenance and repair records for marine equipment and facilities; 
• Skilled in the use of tools and equipment used in the work; and
• Able to perform basic maintenance on marine equipment and facilities.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Successful completion of Grade 12 plus additional courses to obtain the required certification in boat safety training including a Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card, and a Marine Radio Operators Card.
• A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience working in marina facilities. Experience working as a Marine Facilities Security Officer is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. 

Working Conditions 

This position involves working in close proximity to boats of various sizes, docks, waterfronts, and moorage facilities yearround in all weather conditions. The position requires the capacity to:

• Respond to emergency situations including working variable hours/shifts/days;
• Work safely over water;
• Effectively operate tools and equipment;
• Work on surfaces that may be uneven, unbalanced, slippery, moving, inclined and at varying heights above water; Perform duties in both outdoor and indoor environments, including during poor weather; and
• Effectively resolve challenging encounters with the public and/or challenging waterfront situations.

• Pay Range/Rate: $34.50 - $40.64
• Hours of Work: Flex Blocking System in Effect: This position is on a flexible-blocking schedule. Hours will be scheduled based on operational need and can include daytime, evening, weekdays and weekends shifts of varying lengths as each shift can be extended or shortened by moving blocks of time as required within the pay period. Day shifts will be scheduled if there is no operational need for evening and weekend work.
