National Strategy on Abandoned and Wrecked Vessels

Abandoned vessels have been a chronic issue in BC for many years, and businesses and municipalities have grown increasingly frustrated in how to deal with them. The National Strategy on Abandoned and Wrecked Vessels, which was announced as part of the Oceans Protection Plan, in November 2016, introduced targeted measures to address problem vessels in Canadian waters. Marie-Claude Lanouette from Transport Canada and Susan Pickrell from Canadian Coast Guard will provide an overview of the National Strategy, including key measures such as Bill C-64 (the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act), enhancements to the existing pleasure craft licensing registration system, long-term owner-financed funds to address problem vessels, development of national inventory and risk assessment methodology, and education and outreach.

Recreational Boating & the Southern Resident Killer Whale Recovery Program

The Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW) are iconic to BC’s Southern Coast. Over the years, the population of the SRKW has fluctuated, creating concern about their long term recovery and survival. In response to this concern, the Government of Canada has introduced a number measures to protect the SRKW. Jeff Pelton, Transport Canada, Oceans Protection Plan and Corey Jackson, Fisheries & Oceans Canada, will present the government’s efforts to reduce acoustic and physical disturbance from vessels in the Salish Sea, amendments to the Marine Mammal Regulations under the Fisheries Act, and practical information on what the recreational boating community can contribute as a stakeholder in the Salish Sea. Delegates will be invited to ask questions about the program and any potential impact the government’s measures could have on recreational boating.

2018 Sport Fishing Report

Martin Paish is returning to the Boating BC Conference with the annual Sport Fishing Report. 2018 has been an intense year for sport fishing given bold moves made by the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans to protect the Southern Resident Killer Whale’s food supply. The outcome of those decisions on the 2018 fishing season, and the impact on recreational boating is just one part of the Fishing Report, which will include updates, trends and forecasts from the Sport Fishing Institute of BC.

The 2018 Boating BC Conference will be hosted at the Pacific Gateway Hotel in Richmond, BC.
