The Freedom of the Open Waters Comes With a Catch

As new boaters have experienced first-hand the exhilaration of seeing BC on the water (the number of pleasure craft operator cards issued in 2020 increased 67 per cent, according to Transport Canada) there is now more than ever, a greater need to educate boaters on proper safety protocols.

This is imperative, as these waterways are shared with BC Ferries and countless cargo ships, as well as other personal boaters. Just as you would follow the rules of the road, so too must you follow those of the water. And for good reason - it takes a BC Ferry up to 1 km to detect and avoid a collision if another vessel suddenly crosses their path.
